Narratives of Displacement Conference in London

Titus Pop Ph.D and Dr. Borbála Bökös Ph.D (PCU, English Department) attended the International Conference “Narratives of Displacement (Navigating Borders: Immigration, Refugeeism and Citizenship)” organized by the Birkbeck College, University of London, on October 13-14, 2018 in London.

The conference brought together academics and specialists who attempted to explore the narratives of displacement in a cross-disciplinary approach which brought together the historical, cultural, social and literary expertise in the handling of text. The conference particularly focused on time and space representations and on treatment of the theme of cultural ambivalence and identity conflict. The subject of displacement was regarded as both a migration, voluntary or forced, and a sense of being socially or culturally “out of place”.

Borbála Bökös in her paper: An American Traveler in 19th Century Hungary and Transylvania. Charles Loring Brace's Travel Narrative, analyzed the representations of Hungary and Transylvania in the nineteenth century as seen in the Westerner other’s mirror as well as defined by intercultural encounters, while Titus Pop in his The English Language-A Multicultural Legacy provided an analysis of the multicultural legacy of the English language, analyzed from three perspectives: a historical one, a social one and a geographical one.
